The Benefits of a Separately Managed Account (SMA)
An explanation of the fastest growing segment of the asset management business.

Formed in 1987, Concord is a privately-owned, Chicago-based investment adviser that has built its reputation on managing private and institutional portfolios prudently and competitively in both stable and volatile markets.

Concord is an affliate of Madison Investment Advisors, Inc. of Madison, Wisconsin, a privately-owned firm founded in 1974. Madison and its other subsidiaries, including the Mosaic family of no-load mutual funds and Madison/Scottsdale (Phoenix, Arizona), a specialist in the management of insurance company portfolios, manage approximately $10 billion in total discretionary assets.

Our Services

Concord is a specialist in the management of separate accounts, or private investment accounts, that are designed and managed using individual securities to achieve stated financial objectives.

Our Unique Characteristics

• We service fewer but larger relationships to enable us to understand and meet the needs of every client.
• We are fee-only and benefit from neither commissions nor rebates of any sort. We are independent of the investment banking and brokerage business.
• We combine the advantages of having direct access to the outstanding investment research offered by Madison with the personal attention of Concord’s experienced staff of CFA-designated portfolio managers.
• We can generally move in and out of security positions without materially influencing the price, a potential advantage during volatile market periods.
• As owners, our senior staff is stable and thus able to maintain long-term, multi-generational client relationships.

Investment Performance

Both Concord and its parent, Madison Investment Advisors, manage their portfolios with the goals of generating solid, consistent returns, while reducing the market’s risk and portfolio volatility.

The Profile of Our Individual and Institutional Investors

Our individual investors are typically:

• Mature (between the ages of 50 to 75, although we service investors of all ages), high net worth investors and their families.
• Concerned about protection of principal as well as growth.
• Owners of businesses, professionals, retirees and senior officers of large companies.
• Investors who wish us to manage most if not all of their liquid assets under one roof.
• Interested in a direct, personal and private relationship with their own experienced portfolio manager.
• Prefer that we interact with their other financial advisors, (CPAs, lawyers, et al.) to minimize costs, conflicts and taxes.

Our institutional investors are:

• Corporate and non-profit retirement plans, corporate funds, foundations and other non-profit investors.
• Medium- to smaller-sized institutional investors who might not receive priority service from larger financial firms.
• Concerned about protection of principal as well as growth.

How We Work With Prospective Clients

Our investment management service starts with an initial interview when we learn about the prospective investor’s financial situation, priorities, and individual needs. We then provide a written, in-depth analysis of the current portfolio(s), offering our specific recommendations on what we believe should be done to achieve the prospect’s goals.

Included in our presentation are our specific recommendations regarding asset mix, individual securities, and tax implications, if any. Our ultimate goal is to help each client achieve his or her financial goals with the appropriate level of risk. To that end, we are willing to work closely with the prospect’s other advisers to produce a well-integrated, wealth management program.
